Vision and Objectives

The heritage of modern art is rich and varied, and is in the process of evolution across the globe through constant experimentations. The Kolkata Museum of Modern Art aims to capture this legacy in its totality. Its principal objective is to collect, preserve and exhibit a national collection of fine art ranging from the 19th century to contemporary times. But, it also seeks to create special spaces for music, photography, cinema, performing art and literature. The Museum will thus provide a common forum where all the art forms in their variegated richness can come together to provide a holistic creative experience reflecting India’s cultural heritage.

The Museum will also have a research and educational dimension. It will build up a database and a state-of-the-art library pertaining to the arts. Restoration of art works and their authentication will also be carried out under the auspices of the Museum with the help of latest technology. Lectures and courses on art will be an important component of the Museum.

Housing a rich collection of permanent exhibits, it will host travelling shows of distinction and significant events of art. It will feature works from across the globe—for connoisseurs and ordinary art lovers alike.
